IP20, IP44 or IP65: which lights are safe outdoors
Short answer: IP20 indoors only. IP44 for covered balconies, verandas and sheltered porches. IP65 for anything genuinely exposed, gates, compound walls, gardens, terraces without cover. In an Indian monsoon, the gap between IP44 and IP65 is the gap between a light that lasts and one that fails dangerously.
Reading the number
IP stands for Ingress Protection. The first digit is protection against solids and dust, the second is protection against water. So in IP65, the 6 means fully dust-tight and the 5 means protected against water jets from any direction. A higher second digit is what matters outdoors.

The mistake that actually causes fires
Running an IP20 indoor string along an open balcony railing because it looked fine during the dry season. The first heavy rain gets into the controller housing or a solder joint, and you have a short circuit on a live circuit at the exact moment nobody is watching. If a product page does not state an IP rating, assume IP20 and keep it indoors.
The rating covers the whole product, not just the wire
A string can have well-sealed LEDs and a completely unprotected inline controller or plug. Check where the controller will physically sit. The usual solution is a small weatherproof junction box, or simply planning the run so the controller and plug end up under cover even when the LEDs are not.
Other things that matter outdoors
- UV exposure, clear wire yellows in direct sun over a season or two; black or green wire holds up better
- Wind, anything on an open terrace needs fixing every 40–50 cm or it saws through its own insulation
- Earthing, outdoor runs should be on a properly earthed circuit, ideally with an RCD
- Heat, a controller in a sealed box in direct afternoon sun can exceed its rating even in dry weather

- Can I use IP44 lights outside in the rain?
- Only under cover. IP44 handles splashes and light spray, not sustained direct rain. For an exposed position in an Indian monsoon you want IP65.
- Are fairy lights waterproof?
- Most are not. Standard indoor rice lights are IP20. Some are IP44, which is splash-resistant rather than waterproof. Always check the rating on the product page rather than assuming.
- What IP rating do I need for a terrace?
- IP65 if the terrace is open to the sky. IP44 is acceptable only if there is a solid roof or pergola cover above the entire run.
